The Oscars

Tonight is the 90th Academy Awards (the Oscars) and I’m super excited! Josh and I have plans to make steak, crack open a bottle of wine and watch the shows for as long as we can stay awake (spoiler: I rarely make it through the end… whoops).

Josh and I are BIG movie fans, so we’ve seen a lot of the movies nominated. I didn’t used to see as many movies until I started dating Josh 9 years ago. He’s a super movie fan. Like, he has favorite production companies and favorite producers. He doesn’t even watch movie trailers because he feels like it ruins his movie experience once he finally gets to see them. To be honest, I don’t think I would know which movies I want to see unless I see the trailer for it, but he’s more committed than I am.

So of the Best Picture nominees, Josh has seen all of them but Call Me By Your Name, and we were actually supposed to see it and then I got sick. In case you’re a normal human whose life isn’t constantly punctuated by movies, these are the nominees for Best Picture:
-Call Me By Your Name
-Darkest Hour
-Dunkirk
-Get Out
-Lady Bird
-Phantom Thread
-The Post
-The Shape of Water
-Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

I’m guessing that The Shape of Water will take the crown!

For Best Director, the nominees are:
-Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)
-Jordan Peele (Get Out)
-Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird)
-Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread)
-Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water)

This is harder to guess. Normally, the winner of Best Director indicates what will win for Best Picture, but this year’s nominees are different. I’m hoping that Jordan Peele will get it, but I’m guessing that Guillermo del Toro or Greta Gerwig will take it.

For Best Actress, the nominees are:
-Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water)
-Frances McDormand (Three Billboards)
-Margot Robbie (I, Tonya)
-Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird)
-Meryl Streep (The Post)

Normally, once I see Meryl on a nomination form, I’m guessing immediately that it’ll be her. For good reason! She’s an amazing, amazing actress, and so fun to watch. But this year, I’m super pulling for Margot Robbie because I, Tonya was one of my favorite movies this year. If not her, I’d love to see Frances McDormand get it because she was phenomenal.

For Best Actor, the nominees are:
-Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name)
-Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread)
-Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out)
-Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
-Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.)

I’m guessing that Daniel Day-Lewis will get it. He was amazing in Phantom Thread, and he’s said that he’s retiring after this role. This would be a great one for him to end out with, because it was such an interesting movie and he did an amazing job.

So those are my guesses! What do you think? Are you watching the show tonight? Click Here for a printable award ballot so you can watch at home as well!
